The Conwy/Clwyd Projects:
1) Melai tree blockages at SH9005867826 and SH9008568352. The two timber blockages are creating a significant bed height difference within the channel and will continue to trap debris in the future further increasing their impact. The location of these blockages downstream of the Melai Farm project increases the importance of their removal. APPROX 4.2KM IMPROVED ACCESS
2) Wybernant Habitat- creation of spawning beds along stretch. Downstream limit- SH7812453631, upstream limit- SH7792853406. Recent severe spate events have washed out the bulk of the spawning gravel in this section of stream and the project aims to create new areas with a combined approach of constructing bed-check weirs and re-introducing suitable substrate. 400M IMPROVED SPAWNING AREA
3) Afon Las- simple pre-barrage fish pass on weir at SH8044674741. The construction of a simple fish-pass on this small concrete weir will open up approximately 2+km of excellent juvenile habitat. APPROX 2KM IMPROVED ACCESS
I am writing to bring you up to date with the above programme and what has been happening in the intervening period since the training course was complete. By now the majority will have taken the exams succesfully and are qualified to apply the procedures taught for application on the river bank. On behalf of the Welsh Dee Trust and the Clwyd and Conwy Rivers Trust I wish to congratulate all those who have been successful and I hope you have, by now, received your qualifying certificates. For anyone who was unsuccesful, it does not mean the end of the road, quite the contrary because as you have experience on the methodology being applied you are at an advantage as being a person who has wider knowledge and therefore able to assist other volunteers practically in safer operations, who ever may be involved. The only restriction is that you will need to work alongside a person who has the formal qualification. For all who have qualified you are obviously free to tackle the issues on your waters as well as elsewhere under arrangement, and in time I hope this widening of treatment along with other volunteers will increase. One person failed to complete because of serious injury (inflicted on a cricket field and not as part of the programme) and he will be able to complete the course this winter if fit.

The Trust is pleased to announce that it is now in a position to think seriously about biding for funding to enable it to put in hand much needed improvement works to the Clwyd and Conwy river systems. However in order to secure this funding it will be necessary for us to submit formal bids or applications to the various funding bodies.
To do that we need to know what improvements are needed? We are all aware of areas that we feel need work but we need to co-ordinate the recording of these in a meaningful way so that our bids are both as accurate as possible and as relevant as possible to specific areas on the rivers. This is where we need your club or syndicates help: you have to carry out detailed surveys of your river.

Afonydd Cymru (our umbrella organisation) has appointed Project Officer, Richard White (pictured to the right) to deliver their EISWF project in North Wales, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Fisheries Fund. The project will deliver significant improvements to the riverine environment which will bring benefits to migratory fish through improved water quality, increased access to spawning areas and river habitat restoration.

The Celtic Sea Trout Initiative is to be formally launched 11th March at the Environment Agency Offices in Bangor.
The Celtic Sea Trout Programme aims are:
- To understand and describe sea trout stocks in the Irish Sea and thereby to enhance sea trout fisheries and strengthen their contributions to quality of life, to rural economies and to national biodiversity.
- To explore the use of sea trout life history variation as a tool to detect and understand the effects of climate change.
The project involves the collection of sea trout scale samples from 80 rivers, estuaries, coastal waters and further offshore, over three years.
